CHAPTER 13

SAM

When Sean’s deep voice reaches where we sit in the lounge, butterflies erupt in my stomach. This man has such an effect on me. Now that Marie has planted the seed inside my brain, I can’t stop wondering if my recent low mood has as much to do with guilt and sadness over leaving Sean as it does the fire. That I could be crumbling because I’m lovesick over a man, doesn’t sit well with me. But this isn’t just any man. I’m realising that more and more.

The second he steps into the room, our eyes lock. He pauses in the doorway and stares. The intensity in his gaze takes my breath away. He doesn’t smile and he doesn’t say a word, but I can feel that something has shifted.

Suddenly, I’m as nervous as I am giddy.

He finally moves, coming over to join Hayley, Nathan, and me on the large, plush corner sofa.

“Feeling better?” There is a mischievous gleam in Nathan’s eyes and again Sean doesn’t say a word, just fixes Nathan with a hard glare. Yikes. I don’t know what’s going on, but the tension in the room is stifling. Sean leans his thick thigh against the arm of the chair beside me and nothing is said about their exchange. Hayley distracts Nathan with talk of some new arrivals to the lodge who’ll be working with him.

With their attention shifted to each other, Sean leans over and speaks close to my ear, low enough that nobody else can hear. His warm breath tickling my neck has me sitting stock still, hands clasped tightly in my lap.

“He’s pissed off because I told him you’re mine.”

My heart stutters in my chest, and I whip my head around to face him. Those are the words he spoke to me that night. That amazing night. The night that was so perfect I freaked out, the strength of my emotions overwhelming me and causing me to bolt.

I’m trying to work out whether he realises how significant those words are to me. Sean looks at me, expression inscrutable as he straightens like he hasn’t thrown me for a complete loop. I admire his strong profile and brawny build as he smiles and chats with Hayley about her due date.

Sitting there silently, I try to wrap my head around his words. Did he only say that to piss Nathan off? Or does he really mean he’s willing to give me another chance? My mind drifts back to the last time he called me his, and I shift in my seat as my body reacts instantly. Every cell in my body heats and I squirm, fighting the arousal that rushes through me.
